The unravelling

Public humiliation, and the scene where the women finally get to speak.
You have already seen this. The bit where he hits her in front of the visitors from Venice. Uncomfortable to watch, and it is meant to be.

What actually happens

Who wants what

Characters are not people, they are the writer's tools. The fastest way into an essay is knowing what each one is being used to want.

OthelloProof he has already decided on. He is now reading everything as confirmation.
IagoTo keep the machine running. Note how little he has to do now.
DesdemonaTo understand. She keeps asking what she has done, and never gets an answer.
EmiliaTo say the thing nobody says. Her speech is the play's clearest argument about how this society treats wives.
The one scene that matters: The willow scene, 4.3. The only scene in the play with no men in it, and the only place the tragedy gets described from the women's side. Desdemona is quiet and resigned; Emilia is furious and analytical. If you want to write about gender or about the play's own attitude to marriage, this is the scene.

Three quotes from this act

Short on purpose. You are aiming for fragments you can drop inside your own sentence, not lines to recite.

"Am I that name, Iago?"
Desdemona, 4.2
Use it for: She cannot even repeat the word. Use it for what accusation does to a person's standing.
"Let husbands know / Their wives have sense like them"
Emilia, 4.3
Use it for: The play's own counter-argument. Use it for gender and for the play criticising its world, not just depicting it.
"She was in love, and he she loved proved mad"
Desdemona, 4.3, of the willow song
Use it for: The song is her own story arriving early. Use it for foreshadowing and structure.

Put the act back together

Tap the six things in the order they happen. Get it wrong and it tells you what comes first. Knowing the order IS knowing the play.

Who said it?

Three lines from this act. Tap who says each one. Attributing a quote to the wrong character in the exam undoes the whole point you were making.
